What is Australian Therapy (AT) and How Does it Work?

A Brief Anatomical and Physiological Explanation for the Medical Profession

The Australian developed Australian Therapy (AT) is a full body treatment that was developed to improve the body’s innate ability to repair itself from a wide range of chronic, long term health conditions. Two side effects are the improvement in physical performance (including quicker recovery time) and a sense of well-being of anyone treated.

Australian Therapy (AT) will also provide nearly instant results on a range of acute problems such as sport and work-related injuries. As an example, AT can provide immediate pain relief and mobility to a sprained ankle with a 20 second ankle treatment.

In both cases, these results are indirectly achieved, by improving the posture. The posture is improved by allowing muscles to “relax” or return to the muscle’s uncontracted length.

This is achieved by using one or both, of the two AT techniques. One AT technique is used on tendons and the other AT technique is used on muscles.

The aim of the AT technique for tendons is to activate the Golgi tendon organ (a type of proprioceptor) which will trigger the connected muscle to relax. This technique will vary depending on the length and location of the tendon.

The second type of AT technique is carried out on the muscle (usually on the belly of the muscle) where the nerve, vein and lymphatic vessel connect to the muscle.

The aim of this AT technique is to gently push the blood and lymph fluid along their respective vessels, away from the muscle. This process is like squeezing toothpaste out of a toothpaste tube.

This is achieved by gently using the fingers to slide the skin over the underlying muscle, but in the right direction and location. An important part of this AT Technique is to move the blood and lymph fluid gently enough to avoid stimulating the nervous system.

If this AT technique is performed correctly, the first physiological effect is the lymphatic system will remove any excess or trapped neurotransmitters from the synaptic cleft. The immediate effect of this is the muscle stops trying to contract.

The effect of moving blood along the vein, away from the muscle, is that due to a pressure differential, blood will exit the muscle to replace the blood moved along the vein.

This in turn creates a pressure differential in the muscle which literally causes fresh blood to be “sucked” into the muscle from the artery.

As muscles need energy to relax, the fresh blood entering the muscle will supply energy to the myosin heads allowing them to release, allowing the muscle to “relax” or return to the muscle’s uncontracted length. This may take several minutes.

The improved blood flow will also supply additional nutrients and oxygen to speed the repair of any injury to the muscle. The movement in lymph fluid will also help alert the immune system to any infections etc.

As AT is a full body treatment, by “relaxing” selected muscles, the individual’s posture will immediately improve. This provides nearly instant results on joint related pain because as the bones realign it improves the alignment and the function of the joints. The improvement in blood and lymphatic flow will also speed up the body’s ability to repair any damage or injury.

The second advantage of AT is the improvement in organ function. This is based on the theory that “the structure of the skeleton affects the function of the organs”.

One example is if a person has bad posture and is physically bent and twisted, the internal organs (lungs, liver, spleen etc) are all being squeezed and “squashed” out of shape. While this may not be fatal, the organs will not work as effectively as they were designed to.

As the AT treatment improves the individual’s posture, the internal organs return to their correct shape and location. This improves organ function and is one of the reasons AT achieves the quick results it does on a wide range of health issues.

The last piece of an AT treatment, and possibly the most important, is the effect AT has on the Autonomic Nervous System (ANS).

As an AT treatment is carried out, brain mapping shows the patient’s brain will produce Alpha waves and the person will feel like they are in a deep meditation.

When this occurs, the Sympathetic Nervous System (SNS) stops overriding the Para-sympathetic Nervous System (PNS) and the body goes into stress free repair mode. The PNS is often referred to as the “resting and digesting” division of the ANS.

To achieve a similar state, Australian hospitals put severe trauma patients into an induced coma for several days to accelerate the body’s ability to repair itself.

This is may also explain why AT produces quick results on autoimmune conditions.

Because of the effect AT has on improving posture, improving the blood and lymphatic flow, the improvement in organ function and the way it allows the body to go into a stress free repair mode, Australia Therapy has a legitimate claim to being the most holist form of health care ever invented and the first physical therapy to be developed using modern anatomy and physiology.

Australian Therapy was methodically developed over 20 years and 50,000 plus treatments.

Footnote

The reasons for the psychological benefits from Australian Therapy are yet to be fully explained. It is currently suspected the reduction in Anxiety is due to the improvement in breathing which increases blood oxygen levels preventing the SNS going into “fight or flight” mode. While the improvement in concentration and the reduction in procrastination are currently best described as the Individual starts thinking in a “level-headed” manner.

This may not be fully explained until research can understand why hopping around on one foot reduces the ability to concentrate, have an in depth conversation or to remember (or calculate) the times tables i.e. 1x1=1, 1x2=2 etc.
